The Golden Cup: Pub Restoration Project

Golden Cup Pub Tile Restoration

Located just opposite the H&E Smith factory in Stoke-on-Trent. Owner Steve Buckley recently completed a £250,000 renovation of the pub to return the local institution to its former glory.

Golden Cup Pub Tile Restoration

With strong family ties to The Golden Cup (his grandparents ran the pub between 1952 and 1991, and Steve worked there as a teenager), when Steve by chance saw it was for sale, he snapped up the property. His vision was to restore the pub’s character and charm by reinstating its original features alongside new, high end interior finishes.

Steve asked us to reproduce the original interior tiles in both the bar and back room, some of which had been hidden behind plasterboard for many years. We made the reproduction ceramic wall tiles using steel dies in order to match the originals like-for-like, and the glazes were also matched to the original tiles in both rooms.

The tiles in the back room were trickier to recreate, as the originals were likely glazed by hand using a sponge, making every tile unique. There wasn’t a single wall in this room where the tiling scheme was intact, hence our reproduction tiles were applied throughout the space and old and new now sit side by side on every wall.

The result of the refurbishment is incredible – The Golden Cup has been given the renovation it deserved whilst carefully retaining its heritage. We’re so pleased to have played a part in Steve’s labour of love and the restoration of this well-loved inn quite literally on our doorstep.
